Metron

http://www.scienceoxford.com/

Project aims:

Host an exhibition on mathematics

Summary of activity:

We acted as a gallery space for “Metron” a pair of local artists who had exhibited previously at Modern Art Oxford on the subject of measurement.

Evaluation approach:

Numbers on the door; Post event evaluation; Personal reflection.

What went well:

1: The exhibition itself was aesthetically very pleasing
2: We ran a series of linked events which were very successful
3: The project was a valuable development opportunity for the team

What was learned:

1: There was insufficient collaboration between SO and the artists – this was partly because of a changeover in staff. Next time we would take a much tighter line on what is being exhibited in the space and what it means. This would allow us to interpret the exhibition far better to our visitors.
2: At its heart, this was about a difference in philosophy – we were worried about the exhibition’s scientific and mathematical content, and they were worried about its artistic integrity. Next time we will have to bottom this out right at the beginning.
3: We relied too heavily on AV exhibits that presented us with a number of technical and security issues. Next time we would try and avoid this.
